RIP: Pete Lyon
A good friend to IMSA was laid to rest on Monday.
Long-time steward Pete Lyon passed away on June 17 at his home in Colorado. A memorial service was held for him in his hometown of Clinton, Iowa this week.
Lyon was an attorney specializing in risk management and legal counsel in motorsports, practicing in the Boulder, Colorado area. One of his roles was acting as a one-man unofficial risk management department for the previous iteration of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA).
In addition to IMSA, Lyon worked with other motorsports entities, including the Sports Car Club of America and the National Hot Rod Association.
“Pete had everyone’s respect,” said Scott Atherton, IMSA President and COO. “He had a gentle, unassuming style, and an outstanding ability to bring undisputable reason into many ‘spirited’ competitor/steward discussions that occurred over the years. He would patiently listen to the often heated exchanges, then offer up a perspective that would immediately quiet everyone with their thoughts – knowing he was right.
“Pete will be missed by all of us.”
