Dylan Murry Closes Out First Professional Season

When Dylan Murry reflects on his first professional season as a race car driver, he simply shakes his head in disbelief.
“I am just so thankful to have had the chance to race in three different series (IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, IMSA Prototype Challenge and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East). Those are series that I have always looked up to. It’s very humbling to be classified as a professional now.”
The 19-year-old certainly didn’t let his first pro opportunity slip through the cracks. While gaining valuable experience throughout 2019, he managed to finish tied for sixth in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge driver standings (with co-driver and team owner Jim Cox), while collecting a fifth-place finish in the IMSA Prototype Challenge standings. Additionally, he captured a sixth-place finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Watkins Glen in August.
“I raced against so many great drivers this year, it was incredible,” said Murry, the son of former sports car world champion, David Murry. “Racing with some of the veterans of sports car racing taught me a lot about race craft and strategy. It is really tough to pass a lot of these people because some have been doing it for longer than I’ve been alive.”
To be sure, there were some notable highlights along the way for Murry, including his first pro victory.
“There were two races that meant a lot – my very first pro win in the Prototype Challenge with MLT Motorsports at Mid-Ohio and my first win in the Michelin Pilot Challenge with Riley Motorsports at Watkins Glen,” said Murry. “The Mid-Ohio win was a very emotional one. I had my whole family there watching, which was really cool. Not to mention, my dad was part of the team and I was working with him all the way through.”
And, what about having your dad to lean on throughout the season?
“To be able to learn from my dad and have him at all of the races was really special,” offered Murry. “We also drove together at the first race of the season in Daytona which was incredibly exciting.”
While racing for points will have to wait until 2020, there’s still business to attend to this weekend at the Michelin IMSA SportsCar Encore at Sebring International Raceway.
“While we won’t be racing for points, I’m still really excited to compete in this race,” said Murry. “It’s a four-hour race, so a lot of strategy will come into play. Sebring is a pretty physical track too with not much time to rest, so it will be quite hectic.”
