IMSA MICHELIN PILOT CHALLENGE AUTOMOTIVE PARTNER MAZDA MOTORSPORTS
Mazda has always been a challenger brand, one who sees the potential for humans to reach new heights when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. This spirit of human ingenuity allowed Mazda to help when its hometown of Hiroshima faced its greatest, and since then in the auto industry and more specifically in racing. Mazda became the first Japanese auto manufacturer to win the coveted Le Mans 24 hour race in 1991 after trying for 21 years. Mazda redefined the roadster industry in 1989 with the launch of the iconic Miata, a staple of grassroots racing still to this day. Mazda has climbed to the top of the IMSA ladder and recorded an epic three in row victory run in the summer of 2019 and for 2020, Mazda Motorsports with partner MultiMatic will once again field a prototype team at the top level of IMSA sports car racing, the Daytona Prototype international (DPi) class of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The Mazda Road to 24 driver development program offers scholarships to help drivers move up the racing ladder from grassroots to the top of North American sports car racing. A big part of that system is the Battery Tender® Mazda Global MX-5 Cup series, a one make series for the iconic Mazda MX-5 (Miata) cars that pits the best talent against each other in identically prepared Mazda MX-5 Cup race cars. The foundation of Mazda’s motorsports legacy has always been the dominance of Mazda cars in grassroots racing. At local and regional tracks across the US, more Mazdas are road raced on any given weekend than any other brand. This has been true for many years and with over 55% share of the race entries, it looks to be that way for many more years to come.
From the gritty and authentic world of grassroots racing, through the ladder series like Battery Tender® Global MX-5 Cup and all the way to the highest level in IMSA competition, Mazda continues to take on new challenges and, with the spirit of human ingenuity, win at all levels.
