Thursday, October 11, 2018

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. October 11, 2018 – The thrills and drama of sports car racing continue next month as entries from around the world will descend on iconic Sebring International Raceway in central Florida for the inaugural IMSA Michelin SportsCar Encore on Nov. 9-11, 2018.

After two full days of practice and qualifying on the 3.74-mile, 17-turn track, the featured event takes place on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 12 p.m. with a four-hour race featuring LMP3, GT3, GT4 and TCR race cars. The event weekend will also include a pair of Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich races.

An IMSA event wouldn’t be the same without the familiar voices of the legendary announcing duo of John Hindhaugh and Jeremy Shaw. They will be on hand to call all of the IMSA action during the weekend as it will be streamed live on IMSA.tv.

A motto of the iconic raceway is “Respect the Bumps,” and the drivers will have to do that in the four diverse classes of race cars. In what promises to be an unforgettable race and weekend, drivers and teams will be competing for a $10,000 winner’s prize and a $5,000 Michelin tire credit to apply for the 2019 season.

The fastest of the four classes competing in the IMSA Michelin SportsCar Encore are LMP3 prototypes. These closed-cockpit race cars use 420-horsepower Nissan engines and Xtrac gearboxes. Chassis are built by one of five approved constructors:  Ginetta, Ligier, Adess, Riley and Norma.

The GT3, one of the most popular classes of GT race cars in the world, and the basis for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Daytona (GTD) class feature several currently homologated race cars that are eligible to participate in the IMSA Michelin SportsCar Encore.

The IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Grand Sport (GS) class saw the influx of numerous race cars upon the adoption of international GT4 technical regulations in 2018. Those cars and others are eligible to compete in the GT4 class at the IMSA Michelin SportsCar Encore.

TCR race cars made their Continental Tire Challenge debut in 2018, and those cars along with many others, are eligible for the IMSA Michelin SportsCar Encore. TCR cars have four or five doors, turbocharged engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters or less, front-wheel drive and sequential, paddle-shift gearboxes.

The list of entries and eligible cars reads like a “Who’s Who?” in the automobile industry. These include Acura, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Lexus, Maserati, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, Nissan, Panoz, Porsche and Volkswagen.

Teams are allowed a minimum of two and maximum of three drivers per car. Platinum-rated drivers are prohibited, and each car may have a maximum of one gold-rated driver, which cannot participate in qualifying.

Tickets will be sold at the gate of Sebring International Raceway each day, and military veterans will be admitted free on Sunday (Veteran’s Day) with proper ID. Following Saturday’s on-track action, there will be a concert at 7 p.m. featuring one of country music’s top young artists Love and Theft along with the Dairy Daughters.
