Major Weekend for Mazda at Mazda Raceway
Thursday, April 28, 2016

This is one of the biggest weekends of the year for the Mazda Motorsports family. As the namesake of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca since the 2001 season, it’s what we call the spiritual home of Mazda in North America. We race our Mazda Prototypes in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship here, but we also test and develop our current and historical race cars at the track. The brand new MX-5 Cup car that will make its debut at the track this weekend was also developed after many test laps here.

Look for the continually improving Mazda Prototypes as we look to extend a streak of best-ever qualifying and race results. In the Continental Tire series, Freedom Autosport will be aiming to win six races in a row at Mazda Raceway. They have finished first and second here the last four years!

It’s about Zoom Zoom for sure, but it’s also about the people that make up our motorsports program.

Last year was a memorable race for Mazda and the Freedom team, as Marine Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Liam Dwyer teamed with Andrew Carbonell to win the Continental Series race as Mazda swept the podium. Races come and go, but we’ll never forget meeting Sgt. Aaron Denning, the man who save Dwyer’s life in Afghanistan. This year, Sgt. Denning will join us again, as will Mike Marmolejo, a physical therapist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Marmolejo helped Dwyer recover from nearly 50 surgeries in order to become a Mazda-backed driver. It’s people like this that make going racing with Mazda even sweeter. We hope you’ll join us.
