"I still remember the four races that I did with MSR back in 2016 like it was yesterday, especially our win at Petit – we had such good performance," Pla said. "Since that moment, I always wished to have the opportunity to drive for Mike (Shank) again and today is the day we can finally announce that. It will be a very exciting time for MSR and I'm ready for the challenge. Next year can't come soon enough and I'm ready to get things started."
The Rolex 24 in January will mark the 15th straight year that Allmendinger will drive for the team in the 24-hour race on the Daytona International Speedway road course. Along with Negri, Pew and the late Justin Wilson, Allmendinger was the overall winner of the Rolex 24 for MSR in 2012. Allmendinger has spent most of the past 15 seasons driving in NASCAR, most recently capturing an Xfinity Series win Oct. 10 on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL.
Meyer Shank Racing competed in IMSA Prototype categories from 2006-2017 before moving to the WeatherTech Championship's GT Daytona (GTD) class with Acura NSX GT3 entries in 2018. Last month, the team was named as one of two Acura DPi factory teams for the 2021 season.
"I always feel so fortunate and lucky to have the opportunity to drive for my close friend Mike Shank and everyone at the Meyer Shank Racing team for my 15th attempt at the Rolex 24," said Allmendinger. "I can't wait to get back to Prototype racing. The DPi machines are very quick and look so fun to drive. I am sure it will take me a few laps to get used to the speed and downforce, but I'll be surrounded by a great team and I know that I will get up to speed fairly quick."
