GTP Look-See: Cadillac Previews Prototype in Development

General Motors Brand Provides Glimpse of Car that Will Compete in GTP Class in 2023

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Cadillac gave the racing world a sneak peek today of its Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) race car under development that will compete in the new class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship starting in 2023.

Cadillac Racing is developing the car in conjunction with Cadillac Design and chassis constructor Dallara. The fourth-generation Cadillac V-Series prototype will feature a new Cadillac engine run in conjunction with a single-specification hybrid powertrain. Participating manufacturers interject design cues from their passenger vehicle line into the look of their prototypes.

Through a historic convergence with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) announced last summer, LMDh prototypes and Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) prototypes will be eligible to race head-to-head in the WeatherTech Championship GTP class beginning with the 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona next January. Likewise, both prototypes may compete in FIA World Endurance Championship races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“While the new race car will take into account IMSA and ACO regulations, Cadillac’s brand characteristics will be instantly recognizable, many of which are seen on our V-Series vehicles today,” said Chris Mikalauskas, lead exterior creative designer, Cadillac. “It will artistically combine form and function to influence the development of the forthcoming race car. Elements of Cadillac’s brand DNA, such as vertical lighting and floating blades, will be present throughout.”

Action Express Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing, two of Cadillac’s WeatherTech Championship teams in the Daytona Prototype international (DPi) class this year, were previously selected to field entries for the General Motors brand when GTP succeeds DPi as the top-level class next season. The Action Express No. 31 Whelen Engineering Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R is the reigning DPi season champion.

Cadillac officials expect a formal unveiling of its GTP prototype this summer.
