Three of Four IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Full-Season Class Championships Separated by 47 Points or Less

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The stage is set for the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season finale, the 29th Motul Petit Le Mans from Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Three of the four championship battles are incredibly tight, with just four points covering Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2), six covering Grand Touring Daytona (GTD) and 47 covering Grand Touring Daytona Pro (GTD PRO). While Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) has the biggest gap of 147 between first and second, it’s still not sealed. There are also Team, Manufacturer, Jim Trueman Award, Bob Akin Award, IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup and other championship battles to settle.

A capacity grid of 54 cars, spread 11 GTP, 11 LMP2, 14 GTD PRO and 18 GTD cars also include the return of many famous faces and extras as all cars run three drivers for the first time since the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring back in March.

Storylines

  • Full-Season Championship Battles: Jack Aitken leads Laurin Heinrich by 147 points in GTP. Tom Dillmann and Jeremy Clarke lead Alex Quinn and George Kurtz by just 4 points in LMP2. Tommy Milner and Nicky Catsburg lead Connor De Phillippi and Neil Verhagen by 47 points in GTD PRO. Russell Ward and Philip Ellis lead Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher by 6 points in GTD. There are others mathematically in range, but these are the gaps between first and second in all classes.
  • IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup: Championships in the five-race Michelin Endurance Cup also will get decided this weekend in the Driver, Team and Manufacturer disciplines. Some leads are bigger than others with points awarded at the 4-, 8-, and 10-hour marks.
  • Jim Trueman Award and Bob Akin Awards: Both of these Bronze-rated driver battles are incredibly tight, with invitations to the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the line. The Jim Trueman Award matches the LMP2 championship gap with Clarke ahead of Kurtz by 4 points. In GTD, Orey Fidani leads Brendan Iribe by 30 points.
  • Manufacturer Title Battles: Cadillac (136-point lead over Porsche) is well-positioned to secure the GTP manufacturer title. Chevrolet holds a 68-point over Ford in GTD PRO and Mercedes-AMG holds a 94-point lead over Aston Martin in GTD. Bigger point swings are possible in the GT classes, with nine manufacturers entered in both classes.
  • Key Third Driver Contributions: With all cars mandated to have three drivers for this race, expect many to make key contributions in the race, most likely in the heat of the day in the middle of the race. Last year’s IMSA GTP champions Mathieu Jaminet and Matt Campbell are both back in separate Porsches, with six-, five-, and four-time IndyCar champions Scott Dixon, Alex Palou and Sebastien Bourdais also among the returning guest stars this race.
  • Last Anticipated Starts for Lexus RC F GT3, Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2: Two of the most successful, longest-lasting and best-sounding GT3 cars are due for their final scheduled IMSA races this weekend with new cars coming from GR and Lamborghini in the future. Vasser Sullivan Racing is set to farewell the RC F GT3, which has been on the WeatherTech Championship grid since 2017, while Wayne Taylor Racing’s Huracán GT3 Evo2 dates back to 2022. The Huracán model as a whole has raced since 2016.

Who’s Hot? 

  • Laurin Heinrich in GTP: Although he needs to overcome the aforementioned 147-point deficit to Aitken, he’s scored three straight GTP podiums.
  • Tower Motorsports in LMP2: This is a quiet contender in Atlanta. The only LMP2 car with two top-fives in the last two races is also a three-time Motul Petit Le Mans winner, claiming LMP2 honors every year from 2020 to 2022.
  • Pfaff in GTD PRO: A third straight podium finish keeps the No. 9 Lamborghini Temerario GT3 in with a remote but not unrealistic shot of a GTD PRO title.
  • Winward and Turner in GTD: The top two in GTD points have a combined four wins, seven podiums and eight top-five finishes in the last four races to set themselves up for a title fight in Atlanta.

Who’s Good Here?

  • Ferrari: Winners of the last two Motul Petit Le Mans in GTD (with Conquest Racing in 2024 and Af Corse USA in 2025), Ferrari goes for a class three-peat with its updated Ferrari 296 GT3 EVO variant spread across multiple teams. Ferrari ranks second to Porsche in Motul Petit Le Mans wins across multiple classes.
  • Nick Tandy and Renger van der Zande: The two active four-time winners at Motul Petit Le Mans have differing goals for this year’s edition. Tandy is trying to secure his first WeatherTech Championship full-season title with AO Racing and Porsche in GTD PRO, while van der Zande hopes to sign off the Acura Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian period with a win.
  • Tom Blomqvist: van der Zande’s Acura MSR teammate has a pair of wins (2022, 2023) and a pair of poles (2022, 2025) at this track. He won the IMSA DPi title here in 2022.
