The SC63 Was Put through the Paces for Two Days at Imola, Italy
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Lamborghini, which will become the fifth manufacturer to compete in the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2024, completed the first test of its SC63 prototype last week at Imola, Italy.
Following a shakedown test earlier in the month at Vallelunga, Italy, the Lamborghini Iron Lynx team went through two days of development testing at Imola with Lamborghini Squadra Corse drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli and Daniil Kvyat taking turns behind the wheel of the LMDh platform prototype. The trio covered a total of 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) over the course of the two days.
“It’s the first time that we’re involved in such a big project starting from scratch,” said Andrea Piccini, Iron Lynx team principal and CEO. “There are many people working together and the first task is to create the right atmosphere and build a team.
“Since we drove the car out of the pits in Vallelunga last week, the drivers reported a general positive feeling. We didn’t have any major issue so far; step by step we’re driving longer stints, learning the car and getting faster. Still a long way to go, a lot of debugging and development needed, but the first impression is definitely positive!”
Much of the test focused on calibrating the SC63’s internal combustion engine – a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V-8 and the first bespoke racing engine developed in-house by Lamborghini Squadra Corse – to the hybrid powertrain system common to all GTP manufacturers. The team worked on setting up the Xtrac gearbox, as rules permit custom gear ratios and mechanical differential slip for every manufacturer. The team also worked on calibrations of the speed limiter and traction control as well as conducting a brake migration, cooling data acquisition and an extensive aerodynamic test.
Lamborghini’s testing program will continue as it prepares for its WeatherTech Championship debut in 2024.
