During a standing room only news conference today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Mazda confirmed a two-car Daytona Prototype international (DPi) program and unveiled its new race car, which will compete full-time in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Prototype class beginning in 2017.

Gibson-Powered Onroak Ligier LM P2 Impresses In North American Debut For PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports

Longtime Prototype Challenge (PC) competitor PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports has made the step up to the Prototype class, with the intention of running a Gibson-powered Ligier JS P217 for a full-season IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship entry in 2017.

“It’s an exciting change,” team owner Bobby Oergel said on Wednesday. “We loved the PC category and what it was all about – still do to be quite honest. But the end result is that as a team, this is a move up in the direction that we ultimately want to go. We’re excited, it’s a lot of fun.”

Porsche will tackle the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season with an all-out newly developed GTLM racer. The new 911 RSR makes full use of the breadth of the global GTE regulations, and in addition to systematic lightweight design, features the ultra-modern, flat-six engine positioned in front of the rear axle. The extremely light four-liter powerplant is highlighted by direct fuel injection as well as a rigid valve drive and is characterized by outstanding fuel efficiency. The new 911 RSR will make its debut at the 55th annual Rolex 24 At Daytona in January 2017.

Anticipation Builds for 2017 IMSA WeatherTech Championship As New GT Daytona Models Begin Testing

Lexus made its long-awaited IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut on the first day of a two-day sanctioned test at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday. The Lexus RC F GT3, operated by Paul Gentilozzi's 3GT Racing team, turned its first laps around Daytona's 3.56-mile road circuit.

Though only one RC F GT3 is present at the two-day test, 3GT Racing will campaign a pair of the cars for the 2017 WeatherTech Championship season. Announced in early 2016, sports car legend Scott Pruett will co-drive one of the Lexus entries with Sage Karam.

WeatherTech Championship Teams Ready For Return To Track

Beginning on Tuesday, November 15, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competitors will return to action for the first IMSA-sanctioned on-track activity since the Petit Le Mans finale more than one month ago.

For two full days,  teams preparing for the 2017 season have the opportunity to participate in preseason testing at Daytona International Speedway, the site of the opening race for 2017, the 55th Rolex 24 At Daytona.

VISIT FLORIDA Racing has secured a new driver pairing to campaign its all-new car for the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Set to share the No. 90 VISIT FLORIDA Racing Gibson-powered Riley Technologies MK XXX, the team will feature a new driver line up in 2017 with Marc Goossens returning to the squad after debuting with VISIT FLORIDA Racing for a full season campaign in 2016. He will be joined by Dutch racer Renger van der Zande in the Gibson-Riley. The 2016 IMSA PC class champion steps up to the Prototype ranks following several years of PC and GT class competition.
