Scuderia Corsa Aims High at Road America

Scuderia Corsa enters Round 4 of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Road America Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2 sitting in second place in the GTD sprint championship.

After taking home second-place at the Grand Prix of Sebring the team earned a well deserve bump up in the points championship. Seven points separate Scuderia Corsa from first place in the overall GTD championship and the team is tied for second in the sprint championship. Road America hosts yet another sprint round with a two hour and 40-minute race giving the team an opportunity to improve its standing in both championship chases.

Scuderia Corsa has an advantage in WeatherTech Racing driver Cooper MacNeil who claims Road America as his home track. MacNeil has logged many miles on the 4-mile, 14 turn track in behind the wheel of different vehicles in various series. He and Ferrari Factory Driver Toni Vilander finished 10th in 2019, giving them an added want to find the podium this year.

For MacNeil Road America very much means home field advantage.

“We’ve got an opportunity to build on the momentum from last week by going to my home track,” MacNeil said. “Unfortunately, with COVID we won’t have the 500 plus WeatherTech employees there to support the team, they’ll be at home supporting us. But I’m looking forward to a great weekend. We’ve always had a pretty decent car at Road America in the past so I think we can build on old data and track knowledge to better our car. We’ll be focused on making our Ferrari faster and getting to the top step of the podium.”

For Vilander his focus is on advancing in the championship.

“Sebring went really well for us and we now need to build on our success,” Vilander said. “I think it’s important that we don’t let the gap to the teams ahead of us grow. The team has been very good in preparing the car so if we can keep this consistency it will be good for us overall.”

Scuderia Corsa takes on the GTD field over a slightly longer weekend schedule. Practice One takes place Friday, July 31 at 5:35 p.m. ET.  Practice Two and Qualifying take place Saturday, August 1 with both sessions aired on the NBC Sports TrackPass. Race day is Sunday, August 2 with the green flag dropping at 12:05 p.m. ET. A full schedule is available on http://IMSA.com.
